The mini-moon is fast becoming the way to honeymoon! Spending those first romantic days together as newlyweds needn’t mean jetting off to some far-flung location. There are a number of dreamy destinations right here in the UK, each of which offers a variety of things to do and see as a newly married couple.
At Holmewood Hall, we’re lucky enough to have many of these exciting attractions on our doorstep. Located just a stone’s throw away from the city of Cambridge and even closer to Peterborough, our stunning venue offers the perfect setting to say “I do” and spend some time together as newlyweds courtesy of a well-timed mini-break. Below, we reveal the nearby attractions that you can enjoy if you decide to extend your stay beyond your wedding day.
Peterborough Cathedral
Mini-breaks tend to be dominated by one thing – a lot of sightseeing. In nearby Peterborough there’s plenty to see, the jewel in the crown being the city’s cathedral.
Peterborough Cathedral was built in the 10th century. Since its construction it’s withstood civil war and been the burial place of two queens. As well as being a magnificent piece of architecture, the cathedral regularly hosts events. Whether you attend an event or go for a visit, this history-rich relic is one of the most spectacular cathedrals England has to offer.
Flag Fen Archaeological Park
If you and your partner are history buffs with an interest in the prehistoric, you’ll want to visit Flag Fen. Here you can take a poignant step back in time to explore how people lived more than 3,000 years ago. The park is home to a full scale Bronze Age village and exhibitions of original remains from the same era.
Key Theatre
Peterborough is a city rich in culture and entertainment and Key Theatre is at the heart of the action. Here you can witness the best performing arts in the region with a schedule packed full of live music, comedy, dance and theatre.
Ferry Meadows
Lovers of the great outdoors will enjoy a trip to Ferry Meadows. Here you can while away the day exploring its endless woodlands, lakes and meadows.
Located just three miles away from Peterborough city centre, Ferry Meadows is the perfect place to relax and unwind. It has a busy calendar of events and activities too, alongside a range of cycling paths, walking routes, horse riding tracks and fishing spots. Couples looking for a more exhilarating experience will want to check out Ferry Meadows’ watersports and outdoor activity centre.
Punting on the River Cam
The city of Cambridge is just a 40 minutes’ drive from Holmewood Hall. There you can enjoy a range of attractions and activities, but seeing the city in style has to be done by punt.
Punting is quintessentially British and utterly romantic, making it the perfect pastime for newlywed couples. There are numerous routes to choose from, including romantic, chauffeur-driven tours. CambridgeshireLive details two of the most popular options:
“Probably the hardest choice you’ll need to make on your punting odyssey. Do you want the picturesque, but invariably busier, route along the historic college backs, taking in the medieval architecture, the grassy lawns, and the Bridge of Sighs? Or would you rather navigate the limpid green waters along Grantchester Meadows, with lazy weeping willow trees, dappled sunlight, and quiet birdsong? Choose carefully, dear punter. Your afternoon depends on it.”
